October 25th
We started out with an easy, relaxing morning. Around 10 am, Leon and his mom came down to take us shopping. Today was all about gift shopping and jade shopping.
We took the bus downtown to the jade store. After looking at our options, we decided against a regular jade bracelet because they seems to be a right fit. We then headed to the jewelry / craft / pets sale area. It was a bizarre place but fun to explore. It also helped to have our translator / bargainer. I think I have checked off everyone on my gift list and may have picked up a few things for myself :) I also had to buy an extra bag to us for getting stuff back to the states!
We had crossing the bridge rice noodles for lunch.
After a day of shopping, we got on a bus to head to Zack's parents' place on the mountain. They picked us up at the bus terminal and drove us to their place. This home was incredible. It was a townhouse. Two homes were connected but the other side was Zack's mom's sister and her husband. This was the closest thing we had seen to American housing. Tall ceilings, four stories, lots of room, porches on each floor, lovely gardens. It was beautiful and quiet. We completely understood why they spend most of their time there and not at their apartment in the city.
We headed down the mountain to have dinner with Zack's parents. Tonight we had boiled fish with rice and fried potatoes. I really enjoyed the potatoes - the only potatoes we've had except McDonald's fries.
As for the name of tonight's post, I got to park the car (Zack's mom recently learned to drive and isn't very comfortable with parking in tight spots). I also had to back up the car not only out of the parking spot but back it up down the alley to the exit. I may have honked the horn too just to have the full China driving experience!
Tomorrow is our last full day in China. It will be bittersweet. We have had such amazing adventures and experiences but I am looking forward to having something other than Chinese food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. For spending 20 days with the same people, we have done pretty great. There have been some moments of frustration but overall it has been a positive and enjoyable experience that will never be forgotten.
